Availability Expectations

To create exceptional guest experiences, we need our team available when our guests visit us most. Consistent availability during these peak times is an essential part of every role at Walls of Clay.

Our greatest staffing needs include:

  • Friday closing shifts
  • Saturdays (all day)
  • Sundays (all day)
  • Thursday evening workshops (occasional)
  • School breaks, including Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break

As a Key Holder, you are a trusted operational leader who ensures every guest enjoys an exceptional experience while keeping the studio running smoothly. You confidently open and close the studio, guide guests through every creative medium, solve problems, and model the standards of Walls of Clay. Key Holders are trusted operational experts who take initiative, support their teammates, and set the standard for operational excellence throughout every shift.

The Key Holder role is the first step into leadership at Walls of Clay. While you’ll continue creating memorable guest experiences, you’ll also begin taking ownership of the studio, supporting teammates, and helping ensure every shift runs smoothly.

Primary Responsibilities

Customer Experience

  • Welcome every guest and confidently explain the creative process.
  • Guide guests through pottery, glass fusing, candles, stoneware, handprints, and custom work.
  • Lead birthday parties, workshops, and group events.
  • Answer phones professionally and assist with reservations whenever possible.
  • Float the studio, anticipate guest needs, and encourage repeat visits.
  • Recommend workshops, events, parties, and new products during the visit, checkout, and pottery pickup.

Studio Operations

  • Open and close the studio independently.
  • Maintain cash handling and POS accuracy.
  • Keep the studio clean, stocked, and organized.
  • Complete DMC, Daily Activity Sheet, and operational checklists.
  • Maintain awareness of safety and kiln procedures.

Team & Culture

  • Model the core values: Be the Hero, Kindness Matters, Always, and Be Fair, Fun, and Flexible.
  • Support and mentor newer team members.
  • Communicate openly and contribute ideas that improve the guest experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This is an active, customer-facing position. While performing the essential functions of the role, employees may be required to:

  • Stand, walk, and move throughout the studio for most of a shift, which may last approximately 4 to 6.5 hours.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, reach, stretch, grasp, carry, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
  • Frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally moving items weighing up to 50 pounds (glaze buckets, wood pallets).
  • Occasionally use an approved step stool or small ladder to retrieve or store supplies.
  • Communicate effectively with guests and team members in a busy customer-facing environment.
  • Visually inspect pottery, glass, tools, labels, customer orders, and the studio environment with sufficient accuracy to perform the role safely.
  • Work around pottery, clay, glass, glazes, cleaning products, kilns, Dremel tools, drills, and other studio equipment.
  • Work primarily indoors at a moderate noise level, with occasional outdoor customer assistance.
  • Work in or near a kiln room where temperatures may be elevated.
