Availability Expectations
To create exceptional guest experiences, we need our team available when our guests visit us most. Consistent availability during these peak times is an essential part of every role at Walls of Clay.
Our greatest staffing needs include:
- Friday closing shifts
- Saturdays (all day)
- Sundays (all day)
- Thursday evening workshops (occasional)
- School breaks, including Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break
Position Summary
As a Team Lead, you own the success of every shift you lead. While you continue to perform all Key Holder responsibilities, your primary responsibility is to lead people, maintain awareness of the entire studio, and create an environment where guests receive exceptional service and teammates perform at their best. Team Leads coach in the moment, direct the flow of the studio, solve problems before they grow, and model the standards and culture of Walls of Clay.

Primary Responsibilities
Customer Experience
- Perform all Key Holder responsibilities.
- Maintain awareness of the entire studio and proactively direct guest flow.
- Lead workshops, parties, and private events with confidence.
- Resolve guest concerns and determine when owner involvement is needed.
- Ensure every guest interaction includes a meaningful invitation to return.
Owning the Shift
- Own the success of the shift from beginning to end.
- Assign work based on business needs and changing priorities.
- Redirect employees respectfully and immediately when needed.
- Coach team members in real time using the WY & WWY framework.
- Recognize great performance and encourage continuous improvement.
- Prevent bottlenecks, keep guests moving, and ensure no guest or employee is overlooked.
- Communicate ongoing performance concerns to the owner along with possible solutions.
Studio Operations
- Ensure all Key Holder operational responsibilities are completed.
- Monitor wait lists, reservations, seating, and studio capacity.
- Oversee opening, closing, cash accuracy, and operational checklists.
- Support kiln flow, inventory organization, workshop setup, and event execution.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and guest-ready studio.
Team & Culture
- Serve as the primary point of contact during your shift.
- Model the core values every day.
- Support onboarding and mentoring of new employees.
- Communicate openly with the owner regarding guest feedback, staffing concerns, and operational opportunities.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This is an active, customer-facing position. While performing the essential functions of the role, employees may be required to:
- Stand, walk, and move throughout the studio for most of a shift, which may last approximately 4 to 6.5 hours.
- Frequently bend, stoop, reach, stretch, grasp, carry, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
- Frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally moving items weighing up to 50 pounds (glaze buckets, wood pallets).
- Occasionally use an approved step stool or small ladder to retrieve or store supplies.
- Communicate effectively with guests and team members in a busy customer-facing environment.
- Visually inspect pottery, glass, tools, labels, customer orders, and the studio environment with sufficient accuracy to perform the role safely.
- Work around pottery, clay, glass, glazes, cleaning products, kilns, Dremel tools, drills, and other studio equipment.
- Work primarily indoors at a moderate noise level, with occasional outdoor customer assistance.
- Work in or near a kiln room where temperatures may be elevated.
